What's It Like Living in Westerville, Ohio? A Local Agent's Honest Guide

by Norby Fischer

Westerville sits on the northeast side of the Columbus metro, and it's one of those suburbs that consistently surprises people who haven't spent time there — because it doesn't feel like a suburb built around a highway exit. It feels like a town.

The heart of it: Uptown Westerville. A genuinely walkable historic district with local restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, and community events throughout the year. Otterbein University sits right alongside it, adding energy, arts programming, and beautiful campus grounds.

Housing: One of Westerville's strengths is variety. You'll find century homes near Uptown, established mid-century neighborhoods with mature trees, and newer construction toward the edges. That range means a broader spread of price points than many Central Ohio suburbs — there are entry points here as well as executive homes.

Outdoors: Westerville takes its parks seriously, with an extensive city park system and trail network, plus Hoover Reservoir on the east side for boating, fishing, and waterfront walking. Alum Creek State Park is a short drive north.

Getting around: Easy access to I-270 and State Route 3 puts most of the metro within reach, with Polaris-area shopping and employment just west and the airport about 20 minutes away.

Who should look here: Anyone who wants an established community feel with a real downtown — and doesn't want to give up convenience to get it.

Every suburb has trade-offs, and the right fit depends on your commute, budget, and lifestyle. If Westerville's on your list, I'm happy to talk through how it compares to neighboring communities and show you what's currently available.
