What's It Like Living in Pickerington? The "Violet Capital of Ohio" Pairs a Historic Village Core With Newer Neighborhoods and Quick I-70 Access
Pickerington sits east of Columbus, mostly in Fairfield County with a small portion in Franklin County. Founded in 1815 as Jacksonville and renamed in 1827, it grew from a small farming village into one of the larger suburbs on the southeast side. In 1996, the state legislature named it the "Violet Capital of Ohio," and locals call it Picktown.
Olde Pickerington Village. The historic center holds City Hall, local shops and restaurants, and the community events that give the city a recognizable downtown. It's compact, and that's part of its appeal.
The housing. Most homes were built from the 1990s onward, in subdivisions spanning a range of price points, alongside older homes near the village center. Much of the surrounding area is unincorporated Violet Township, which has newer neighborhoods of its own. City versus township can affect services and taxes, so check the address.
Parks and outdoors. Sycamore Creek Park and its arboretum anchor the city's park system, and Pickerington has been a Tree City USA community since 1993. Pickerington Ponds Metro Park, a wetland preserve popular with bird watchers, is nearby.
A local landmark. The Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum sits just off I-70 in Pickerington.
Getting around. I-70 runs across the north side of town and US-33 to the south, which makes both downtown Columbus and Lancaster straightforward drives. Shopping and daily errands are concentrated along the main corridors and near I-70.
School district. Most of the city is served by Pickerington Local Schools, but district boundaries don't match city limits everywhere, so verify by address. Research schools through the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce and by visiting in person. I don't rate schools, and fair housing law doesn't allow steering.
Trade-offs. Growth has brought traffic on the main roads at peak hours. Most inventory is resale in established subdivisions, so the exact style and lot size you want may take some patience to find.
