What's It Like Living in Hilliard, Ohio? A Guide to the Northwest Side's Steady Performer

by Norby Fischer

Hilliard sits on the northwest side of the Columbus metro and has grown from a small farming community into one of Central Ohio's more substantial suburbs — while keeping a recognizable center.

Old Hilliard is the historic core: a small walkable district with local restaurants, shops, and the Hilliard Station Park area that hosts community events and a summer market. It gives the city a genuine gathering place.

Housing: Hilliard offers real range, which is its quiet strength. You'll find 1970s and 80s established neighborhoods, extensive 1990s and 2000s development, and continuing new construction toward the west and north. Price points span from more accessible entry-level options through upper-tier homes — one of the broader spreads on this side of town, which is why it works for both first-time and move-up buyers.

Amenities: The city maintains a strong parks system, and the Heritage Rail Trail runs through, connecting to the broader Central Ohio trail network. Homestead Park is a local anchor.

Getting around: I-270 access is easy, Cemetery Road and Hilliard-Rome Road are the main commercial arteries, and downtown Columbus is a reasonable commute. Proximity to the west-side employment corridors is a practical advantage.

Trade-offs: Growth has brought traffic on the main corridors, particularly at peak hours. And as with any high-demand suburb, well-priced homes don't linger.

Hilliard tends to appeal to buyers who want established-suburb infrastructure with more price flexibility than the northwest's pricier options.
