What's It Like Living in Gahanna, Ohio? Creekside Charm on the Northeast Side
Gahanna sits on the northeast side of Columbus, and it's one of those communities that punches above its name recognition. Officially designated the "Herb Capital of Ohio" (yes, really — there's an herb garden and festival heritage behind it), Gahanna blends established neighborhoods with one of the nicer downtown districts in the metro.
Creekside: Gahanna's signature is its Creekside district, where restaurants and shops line Big Walnut Creek with waterfront patios, walking paths, and a genuinely pleasant town-center atmosphere. Summer concerts and community events keep it lively.
Housing: Gahanna is largely an established community — think mature trees, mid-century through 1990s neighborhoods, with pockets of newer construction. That maturity is a feature: settled streets, varied architecture, and lots that newer developments rarely match. Price points span a wide range, giving both first-time and move-up buyers realistic options.
Location advantages: This might be Gahanna's strongest card. John Glenn International Airport is minutes away (with flight paths worth checking street by street — I'll be honest about that). Easton Town Center's shopping and dining is a short drive. I-270 and US-62 access puts downtown and the east side within easy reach.
Outdoors: Beyond Creekside's paths, Gahanna maintains a solid city park system, and the Big Walnut corridor provides green space through the heart of the community.
Trade-offs: Inventory can be tighter than in fast-building suburbs since new construction is limited — established communities mean waiting for resale listings in the neighborhood you want.
If you want an established feel, airport convenience, and a downtown with actual character, Gahanna deserves a spot on your tour list.
