What's It Like Living in Clintonville? Early-1900s Homes, Wooded Ravines, and North High Street at the Center of It All
Clintonville is a neighborhood inside the City of Columbus, just north of the Ohio State campus. It grew up along the streetcar lines that pushed north on High Street in the early 1900s, and that history still shapes almost everything about it.
Where it is. There are no official borders, but most people put the southern edge at Glen Echo Ravine or Arcadia Avenue, the Olentangy River on the west, I-71 or the railroad tracks on the east, and Worthington to the north. Beechwold, at the north end, is often counted as part of Clintonville.
The housing. Expect early-to-mid-20th-century homes: bungalows, American foursquares, Cape Cods, brick colonials, and Tudors, many on tree-lined streets with sidewalks and front porches. The south end holds some of the oldest housing stock, much of it built before 1930. Homes along the ravines can sit on wooded, dramatic lots, while lots on the grid streets are more modest. New construction is rare, so nearly all inventory is resale.
The ravines and parks. Six glacial ravines, including Glen Echo and Walhalla, cut through the neighborhood toward the Olentangy River. Whetstone Park covers about 136 acres and includes the Park of Roses, and the Olentangy Trail runs along the river for walking and biking toward downtown in one direction and Worthington in the other.
North High Street. The neighborhood's main street is lined with independent restaurants, coffee shops, and small businesses, most of them easy to reach on foot from the surrounding streets.
Getting around. SR-315 runs along the west side and I-71 along the east, so downtown, the Ohio State campus, and the northern suburbs are all a short drive.
School district. Clintonville is served by Columbus City Schools; confirm by address. Research any school through the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce and by visiting in person. I don't rate schools, and fair housing law doesn't allow steering.
The trade-offs. Homes approaching or past 100 years old come with older systems, so budget for updates. Along with your standard inspection, consider a sewer line camera inspection, since older sewer lines and mature trees can be an expensive combination. Inventory is tight, and well-priced homes don't sit long.
